I've always been curious how game shows, tv shows, and networks, in general, make the money to pay contestants, hosts, actors/actresses...

They receive money from their sponsors. To get an impression of how much this is just think of the fact that who want to be a millionaire gives away about 50-100 thousand a show on average. That would mean that they would have to at least make that much money every time they showed it. They would also have to stay in the green with 1 million or 10 million like in super millionaire when it showed. Crazy to think about all that cash flow.
